Accompanying South African Clients at the Canton Fair: What We Did in Four Days
Accompanying the clients: helping them catch details
The clients examined products very carefully. They had clear roles – some focused on packaging seals, some on the softness of the top sheet, and some asked specifically about shelf life and storage conditions. We stood by and helped them record: what questions they asked, how suppliers answered, and what the sample specifications were at each booth.
✅ Clients calculated container loading and packaging carefully
Several clients asked the same questions: what are the outer carton dimensions? How many cartons fit in a 40HQ container? They said that with unstable ocean freight, how full the container is directly affects the shipping cost per product. We noted down the outer carton dimensions and estimated loading quantities from different suppliers, then organised the information into a table for the clients to compare.
💯 Portable products drew a lot of interest
The clients showed strong interest in large packs of wipes and portable sanitary napkins. They said that in the South African market, consumers prefer large packs because the unit price is lower and they are easy to carry. We recorded the prices and minimum order quantities from several suppliers and asked our factory to prepare samples to send to them for testing.
🏭 Evening note taking and final handover
Each evening over the four days, we organised the information we had recorded during the day into an Excel spreadsheet, categorised by product type, client concerns, price ranges, and supplier contact details. On the afternoon of the last day, we printed the spreadsheet and gave it to the clients.
💬 No orders placed on the spot, but follow up will come
We did not sign any contracts during this Canton Fair. The clients packed the samples and the product list we had compiled into their suitcases and took them away. As our boss said, accompanying clients at a trade fair is not about pushing them to order on the spot. It is about saving them time, helping them gather information, and giving them a reliable reference when they make decisions back home.
