In the multi-layered architecture of a modern diaper, the core wrapping tissue (also known as core wrap or core enveloping paper) is perhaps the most overlooked component. Tucked inside the chassis, it serves as the protective barrier that encases the absorbent core. Without this thin layer of tissue paper, the Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) particles—the tiny gel-forming granules responsible for liquid retention—would have direct access to the topsheet and, consequently, to the wearer's skin.

Why Core Wrapping Matters

In the initial design of the absorbent core, SAP is either mixed with fluff pulp or applied in layers. While this structure maximizes absorption capacity, it also creates a risk: the SAP particles are small, and when dry, they can migrate. During manufacturing, transport, and even in the package, mechanical agitation can cause SAP to shift. If the core is not fully enclosed, dust or granules can escape the core and sit against the topsheet.

Once outside the core, wet SAP granules can swell and form small gel balls directly against the skin. This not only creates an uncomfortable "gritty" feeling for the user but also increases the risk of skin irritation. The core wrapping tissue acts as a physical barrier, trapping the SAP within the core throughout the diaper's shelf life and during use. This ensures that skin contact remains with the soft, non-abrasive topsheet material rather than the powerful but less skin-friendly SAP.

The Balance Between Retention and Absorption Speed

The wrapping tissue must do more than just hold SAP. It must also allow liquid to pass through quickly. The moment urine hits the diaper, it must travel through the topsheet, past the wrapping tissue, and into the core. If the tissue layer acts as a barrier rather than a conduit, the intake speed will suffer.

High-quality core wrapping tissue is typically made from nonwoven fabric or tissue paper. Key performance metrics include: porosity, which determines liquid strike-through speed; basis weight, which defines the barrier strength; dry tensile and wet tensile strength, which ensure the wrap remains intact even when saturated.

  • Perforated film: Occasionally used, this material combines a film barrier with perforations for liquid entry, helping to keep the core dry.

Where Things Can Go Wrong

When the core wrapping tissue is improperly designed, several problems arise:

  • SAP dusting: If the tissue has insufficient basis weight or pore size, fine SAP particles escape. Even a small amount on the skin can cause friction irritation.

  • Delayed absorption: Poor porosity slows the ingress of liquid, increasing the risk of leakage.

  • Tissue rupture: Weak wet tensile strength causes the wrap to disintegrate once wet, allowing the core to break apart and causing discomfort.
