Do Adult Diapers Feel Stuffy? The Breathable Backsheet Is the Key

2026-05-13

Stuffy or Not Depends on the Backsheet, Not Just the Thickness

Many people think that a thinner diaper is more breathable, but that's not accurate. The key component that determines stuffiness is the bottom layer – the backsheet. Its job is to prevent liquid leakage while allowing water vapor (heat and moisture) to escape.

A good breathable backsheet has countless micropores. These pores are larger than water vapor molecules but smaller than liquid droplets. So urine cannot pass through, but water vapor can. This is the principle of "breathable but leakproof."

An Adult Diaper Without a Breathable Backsheet Will Definitely Feel Stuffy

Low end products often use ordinary polyethylene film as the backsheet to save cost. That type of film is completely non breathable – it traps moisture like a plastic bag. The ammonia and hot vapor from urine cannot escape, and the skin quickly becomes red and itchy. This is a leading cause of incontinenceassociated dermatitis (diaper rash).

💯 How to Check if the Backsheet Is Breathable – Two Ways

Read the product description. Reputable products will state "breathable backsheet." If those words are missing, it’s likely not breathable.

A simple test. Place the backsheet over a cup of hot water, then put an upside down clear cup on top. After a few minutes, if the inside of the top cup fogs up, the material is breathable. If not, it’s not.

Our factory produces adult diapers and Adult Pull Up Pants using micro porous breathable backsheets for every product. We have a breathability tester in our factory and test the moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) for each batch of backsheet material. Data is available on request.

💬 Good Breathability Alone Is Not Enough – Absorbency Matters Too

Breathability alone is not enough. If the diaper absorbs slowly or does not lock in liquid well, the surface will stay wet, which also causes stuffiness. A good Adult Diaper Must achieve three things at once: a dry top sheet, a fastlocking core, and a breathable backsheet. All three are necessary.

We have tested this: in the same environment, an adult pullup pant with a breathable backsheet showed an internal temperature 2-3°C lower after 4 hours compared to a nonbreathable product. Skin humidity was also significantly lower.
