Many people think Wet Wipes are just paper with a little water added. That couldn't be more wrong. A quality wet wipe has a whole formulation system behind it. Water makes up 70% to 90%, but the remaining 10% to 30% is where the real technology lies.

Breaking Down the Main Ingredients

  1. Water — The Largest Component

Water is the main ingredient in Wet Wipes. But it's not tap water—it's purified water treated through reverse osmosis or deionization. Why treat it? To remove impurities, bacteria, and minerals, ensuring the wipes don't spoil during storage. Regular water will develop odor over time; purified water won't.

  1. Substrate — The Wipe's Skeleton

This is the "cloth" part of the wipe. Three common types:

  • Spunlace nonwoven: Most common, soft and strong, no lint
  • Flushable nonwoven: Specifically for Wet Toilet Paper, disperses in water

    This is what actually removes dirt. Baby Wipes use mild non-ionic or amphoteric surfactants—effective cleaning without irritation. Kitchen wipes use stronger anionic surfactants specifically for cutting through grease. Concentrations typically range from 0.1% to 1%.
