Breathable Backsheet Film: Why Micro-Pore Structure Matters for Baby Skin Health

2026-07-22

In the construction of a baby diaper, the breathable backsheet is a critical component directly linked to infant skin health. Its core principle is rooted in precision materials science — achieving the seemingly contradictory functions of "liquid impermeability" and "vapor permeability" through a specialized micro-pore structure.

1. The Principle of Micro-Pore Structure: Expelling Vapor, Blocking Liquid

Breathable backsheet films are typically made by blending polyethylene (PE) resin with inorganic fillers (such as calcium carbonate), followed by a stretching process. During stretching, the interface between the resin and filler particles separates, creating a vast number of extremely fine pores — approximately 10 to 100 million pores per square centimeter, with diameters ranging from 0.01 to 10 microns.

This functions as a sophisticated "molecular sieve": water vapor molecules, with a diameter of approximately 0.0004 microns, can freely pass through these micropores and diffuse outward; whereas liquid water droplets, with a minimum diameter of about 20 microns, are far too large to penetrate through the pores. As a result, trapped heat and moisture from inside the diaper are expelled, while external liquids are effectively blocked.

⭐2. The Direct Impact of Breathability on Skin Health

Infant sweat glands have very small pores and are not yet fully developed, making it difficult for babies to effectively regulate skin temperature. When diaper breathability is insufficient, the heat and moisture generated after urine absorption become trapped inside, creating a hot and humid microenvironment. Prolonged exposure to such conditions leads to excessive hydration of the stratum corneum, weakened skin barrier function, and can trigger diaper rash (red buttocks), redness, swelling, and itching.

According to market research, breathability is one of the top considerations for mothers when choosing diapers. Professional testing indicates that when the water vapor transmission rate of the diaper backsheet exceeds 2500 g/m²·24h, users generally perceive the breathability as satisfactory. Currently, WVTR values among mainstream products range from 800 to 3500 g/m²·24h, showing significant variation across brands.

3. Advanced Breathability Design Upgrades

Some premium brands have achieved technological breakthroughs in breathable backsheet design. For instance, one product claims to feature over 5 billion breathable pores on its backsheet, combined with a unique three-dimensional channel design that accelerates moisture expulsion from the inside out. The topsheet is designed with wave-like embossed dots, reducing contact area with the skin and enhancing airflow to further lower diaper rash risk.

Furthermore, the effectiveness of a breathable backsheet is closely tied to the overall product structural design. If the diaper fits poorly, has an overly thick absorbent core, or has its breathable area covered, even the highest-quality breathable film will fail to deliver optimal performance.

4. Summary

The micro-pore structure of a breathable backsheet strikes a delicate balance between liquid barrier function and vapor exchange. It allows the diaper to reliably prevent leakage while continuously expelling internal heat and moisture, thereby maintaining a relatively dry and healthy microenvironment for infant skin. For hygiene product manufacturers, selecting a backsheet with a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and optimizing product structural design represent key technical pathways to enhancing product competitiveness and earning consumer trust.
