Custom Packaging Minimum Order Quantity: Changing a Color Means a New Cost

Printing Cylinder Cost Is a Fixed Expense

The patterns and text on packaging bags are not printed with a regular printer. Each packaging design requires a separate printing cylinder. The cylinder is a metal roller with your design engraved on its surface. Once the cylinder is ready, it is mounted on the machine, and ink is transferred through the cylinder onto the film.

The cost of a cylinder depends on three factors:

Number of colors: Each color needs its own cylinder. One color is the cheapest; six colors cost six times as much.

Cylinder circumference: The larger the bag, the longer the cylinder, and the higher the cost.

Engraving precision: Fine details require laser engraving, which is more expensive than traditional etching.

Why Does Changing a Color Require a New Cylinder?

A cylinder is a single use tool. When you change a color, the pattern on the cylinder changes, and the old cylinder cannot be reused. Every time you change a color, pattern, text, or size, a new set of cylinders must be made. Once the cylinders are made, that machine can only produce your specific packaging – it cannot produce someone else's at the same time. Therefore, factories set a minimum order quantity to spread the cylinder cost and machine occupation time.

💯How Much Does a Cylinder Cost?

For a standard sized bag with 1 -2 colors, the cylinder cost is roughly $200 to $500. For 46 colors, the cost is roughly $800 to $1,500. This cost is charged as a one time fee when the order is confirmed. If you reorder the same design later, you do not pay the cylinder fee again.

How to Lower the Minimum Order Quantity?

If you are a startup or testing with a small trial order, you can choose one of these options:

Use blank bags with stickers: Produce unprinted blank bags, then apply your own sticker labels after arrival. Cylinder cost is zero, and MOQ can be as low as a few thousand pieces.

Reduce the number of printing colors: Going from 6 colors to 2 colors cuts the cylinder cost by more than half.

Share an existing cylinder: If you can accept a generic background design that we already use for other customers and only change the text, you can save the background cylinder cost.

 What Our Factory Can Do

We offer custom-tailored solutions, from samples to mass production. Send us your artwork, and we will tell you the cylinder cost and the MOQ. You can also start with blank bags to test the market, then open cylinders after sales stabilize. We have a vertically integrated supply chain – from plate making to printing, bag making, and product filling – all done in one line.
