A diaper without SAP uses a core made entirely of wood pulp (fluff pulp). Wood pulp absorbs liquid through capillary action between the fibers. Once saturated, liquid easily returns to the surface under pressure. This type of diaper feels wet to the touch, which can cause diaper rash. The material cost of an all wood pulp core is 30% to 40% lower than a core with SAP. For a size M diaper, the all wood pulp core costs about $0.004-0.007 per piece, while a core with SAP costs about $0.011 -0.017 per piece. Also, an all wood pulp core is thicker, around 5 -8 mm, making the diaper feel like a thick cotton pad and restricting the baby's movement.

Diaper With SAP: Composite Core

A diaper with SAP uses a core that is a mixture of wood pulp and SAP. When SAP particles absorb liquid, they swell into a gel, locking the moisture inside the core. Even under pressure, the liquid does not come back to the surface. The top sheet stays much drier than an all wood pulp diaper. The absorbent capacity is also larger: a size M diaper with SAP can hold 300 500 ml of liquid, while an all wood pulp version holds only 150-200 ml. A core with SAP is also thinner – only 2-3 mm – allowing the baby to move freely. Adult Pull Up Pants also need SAP because adults void larger volumes, and pure wood pulp cannot handle it, leading to leaks.

A diaper with SAP has better dryness: the surface rewet value is less than 5 grams, while an all wood pulp diaper is often over 15 grams. Absorption speed is more than twice as fast with SAP. Leak prevention: a diaper with SAP absorbs quickly, so liquid does not run to the sides; all wood pulp lets liquid pool, causing side leaks. Additionally, a diaper with SAP does not clump after use, while an all wood pulp diaper tends to break into lumps.

💬 Which Products Must Have SAP?

Baby diapers must have SAP. Products without SAP are not competitive and generate many complaints about leaks and diaper rash. Adult Pull Up Pants also are strongly recommended to use SAP. Light incontinence pads can use a lower SAP content, around 30%, to balance cost and performance. Diapers completely without SAP are now rare on the market and are only sold to the most price sensitive, low end segments.
