Does Menopause Still Require Sanitary Napkins? The Difference Between Leakage and Menstrual Care
Does Menopause Still Require Sanitary Napkins?
Menopause Does Not Mean No Need for Care Products
Menopausal women gradually stop menstruating, but this process can last several years. During this time, periods become irregular – sometimes heavy, sometimes light, sometimes arriving suddenly. So they still need sanitary napkins, just less than when they were younger. A few regular daytime pads and panty liners are usually enough.
✅ A New Need During Menopause: Urine Leakage
After menopause, many women face another problem: urine leakage. The reason is weakened pelvic floor muscles. When coughing, sneezing, laughing, or lifting something heavy, small amounts of urine leak out involuntarily. This is called stress urinary incontinence. It is not menstruation.
Leakage and Menstruation Require Different Products
Menstruation: The fluid is menstrual blood, which is thicker than urine. It requires sanitary napkins or tampons. Sanitary napkins need an absorbent core that locks in blood. On heavy flow days, overnight extra long pads or panty style sanitary napkins are needed.
Urine leakage: The fluid is urine – large volume, fast flow, not thick. A regular sanitary napkin will saturate quickly and feel wet on the surface, causing leaks. Urine leakage requires specialized light incontinence pads or Adult Pull Up Pants. These products have absorbent cores designed specifically for urine – faster absorption, better locking, and with antibackflow features.
How to Tell What Your Customer Needs
If you are sourcing products for menopausal women, ask two questions:
Is the problem irregular periods, or can't control urine leakage?
When does leakage happen? A few drops when sneezing, or a larger amount when walking?
Irregular periods → Recommend small pack daytime sanitary napkins and panty liners.
Light leakage (a few drops to a small puddle) → Recommend light incontinence pads – thin, fast absorbing, odor free.
Moderate to heavy leakage → Recommend adult pullup pants – high absorbency, side leak protection.
