Easy-Tear Side Seam on Adult Pull-Up Pants: Why Some Tear Easily and Others Don’t? The Role of Ultrasonic Welding Parameters
How Is the Easy-Tear Side Seam Made?
The two sides of an adult pull-up pant are formed by ultrasonic welding of multiple layers of nonwoven fabric. During welding, a designated tear area is created. Ultrasonic welding uses high frequency vibration, typically between 25,000 Hz and 31,000 Hz. The horn transfers energy to the nonwoven layers, which instantly melt and then solidify, forming a long sealed edge. The difference between a good tear and a stuck seam lies in the subtle control of these welding parameters.
■ Key Parameters: Amplitude, Pressure, and Time
Amplitude: Controls the displacement of the horn and thus the heat generated. Too low, and the weld is weak; too high, the weld becomes too strong and the side seam is fused solid – impossible to tear, or the material may even be melted through.
Welding pressure: Controls how tightly the layers are pressed together. Too little pressure, heat transfer is uneven and the seam comes apart easily; too much pressure, the horn compresses the material too hard, causing excessive melting and hardening – the seam will not tear.
Welding time: Determines the thickness of the melted layer. Too short a time, only the surface melts and the layers do not bond properly – the seam tears too easily. Too long a time, the heat affected zone expands and the sealed edge becomes as hard as plastic.
Pattern and Material Also Matter
The common weld pattern is a continuous longitudinal strip with transverse interruptions. That design creates a stiff, hard edge that is uncomfortable to wear. An improved design uses staggered, spaced out weld dots with a semi circular cross section and rounded edges, which reduces the risk of burning through the material. In addition, the top sheet (thermally bonded nonwoven) and the backsheet (spunbond nonwoven) have different melting points, so the welding parameters must be adjusted for each layer.
■ Consumer Perspective: The Difference Between Good and Bad Tear Experience
The easy tear side seam on Adult Pull Up Pants isnot meant for repeated opening and closing; it is designed to allow quick, hygienic removal after the product is soiled. Consumers like a seam that tears uniformly with light force. They hate a seam that is impossible to tear and forces the caregiver to rip the whole waistband apart – making caregiving more difficult and causing discomfort for the user.
