The Core Principle: Not Magic, but Chemistry

The wetness indicator strip is made of a hot melt wetness indicator adhesive. When dry, it is yellow. After contact with the baby’s urine, it changes colour because of a shift in pH. Healthy baby urine is usually slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. When it meets the pH indicator inside the wetness indicator adhesive, the colour change is triggered.

Most diapers use this “colour change” technology. When urine passes through the top sheet, is absorbed by the absorbent core and spreads near the backsheet, it triggers the colour change switch. So a colour change on the wetness indicator means that enough urine has been absorbed and has reached the detection area.

How Accurate Is the Wetness Indicator? Not a Precise “Volume Meter”

The sensitivity of the wetness indicator varies by brand, absorbent core material, and thickness. Some products are very sensitive to a small amount of urine and change colour immediately; others need a larger amount before they react.

It is not a precise volume meter. It is difficult to know exactly how much remaining absorbency is left by looking at how much of the strip has turned blue. The wetness indicator is essentially an intuitive, binary “already wet” signal. Besides the mainstream pH indicator colour change type, there is also an ink disappearing type, which works on the opposite principle: the ink is washed away by urine, providing the alert. There is also a temperature sensitive wetness indicator that changes colour with body heat. These two types are much less common.

🏭 What Buyers Care About Most: Is the Wetness Indicator Adhesive Safe?

The wetness indicator adhesive is sealed on the outermost backsheet and does not come into direct contact with the baby’s skin. Reputable manufacturers use wetness indicator adhesives that have passed rigorous safety tests to ensure they are non allergenic. Many leading brands have even introduced biobased wetness indicator adhesives, providing even greater safety assurance. In our factory, every batch comes with complete skin sensitisation test reports. So a colour change on the wetness indicator does not mean it is unsafe – on the contrary, it means it is time to change the diaper, which helps prevent diaper rash.

💬 Why Can the Wetness Indicator Adhesive Fail? Points for Buyers to Check

Storage environment: The strip is very sensitive to humidity and air. If diapers are stored in a damp, stuffy environment for a long time, the wetness indicator on unused diapers may turn slightly early. This does not affect absorbency, but it harms the consumer experience.

UV exposure: Strong direct sunlight may cause the wetness indicator material to age prematurely, making it sluggish or unresponsive when the diaper is used.

Very small urine volume: If the baby urinates only a little, the urine may be quickly absorbed and spread within the acquisition layer without reaching the area near the backsheet where the wetness indicator strip is located – then the colour does not change
