The Big Plastic-Reduction Story Inside a Tiny Wet Wipe: A Long-Ignored Polluter Gets a Second Look

Grab a pack of Wet Wipes on your way out. Wipe your hands after a meal. Pull one out for a diaper change. It's all so routine that we barely give it a second thought. But few realize that this thin, soft sheet may contain more plastic than a disposable plastic straw.

Plastic in Wet Wipes: a hidden "white pollution" heavyweight

A 2021 report by Tsinghua University's School of Environment, titled Simulation of Wet Wipe Material Metabolism and Environmental Impact Assessment, revealed a striking figure: in 2019, the amount of plastic used in Wet Wipes on the Chinese market reached approximately 410,000 tons — that's 5.1 times the plastic used in non-degradable express delivery tape and 4.6 times that of non-degradable disposable plastic straws in the same year.

Over 90% of Wet Wipes on the market contain plastic fibers (primarily polyester PET), with mainstream products typically made of a "30% viscose + 70% polyester" blend.

What's even more concerning is the "high environmental leakage" characteristic of Wet Wipes. The same study found that about 18.9% of discarded Wet Wipes directly leak into the natural environment rather than entering formal waste management systems. Once they enter soil or waterways, polyester fibers take decades to degrade. They break down into microplastic fibers that enter the food chain — and eventually, potentially affect human health.

 Global action: from EU bans to a proposed Dutch prohibition

These hazards have already caught international attention. The EU included "Wet Wipes containing plastic" in its Single-Use Plastics Directive back in 2019. In 2025, the Dutch cabinet also began pushing for a Europe-wide ban on the sale of plastic-containing Wet Wipes, as the country spends an estimated €22 million to €55 million annually on sewage repairs caused by wet wipe blockages.

Green alternatives: the opportunity of regenerated cellulose fibers

"The trend of using Wet Wipes is irreversible — we need to find environmentally friendly solutions," said Sun Jian, Vice President of Sustainability at Sateri, a regenerated cellulose fiber manufacturer.

In European and American markets, 100% biodegradable Wet Wipes are gradually gaining consumer favor, and some local Chinese brands such as Winnin have also begun launching related products. On June 4, 2026, People's Daily published a commentary titled The Big Plastic-Reduction Story Inside a Small Wet Wipe, pointing out that among the raw materials used in spunlace nonwoven fabrics for Wet Wipes and dry towels, regenerated cellulose fibers account for only about 39%, leaving significant room for growth. Expanding the application of regenerated fibers in baby care, household cleaning, and other scenarios can help replace traditional plastic-containing fibers while promoting the green upgrading of wiping products.

However, the transition faces real challenges. Plastic-free substrates (such as wood pulp, viscose, Lyocell, and other regenerated cellulose fibers) are typically more expensive than conventional petrochemical-based nonwovens. Plant-based fibers also impose higher demands on production processes in terms of strength, liquid absorption uniformity, and other performance metrics. Moreover, while many products are labeled "plant-based" or "eco-friendly," the material disclosure is often unclear, making it difficult for consumers to tell whether they are truly plastic-free. Accelerating the establishment of green wiping product evaluation standards — so consumers can "understand and choose with confidence" — is a critical step in driving market transformation.

A tiny wet wipe reflects a profound issue: how to advance green development through everyday details. The shift from plastic-containing to plastic-free is not just a technological upgrade — it's also a transformation in consumer mindsets. And that transformation is quietly taking hold around the world.
