The Root Cause of Wet Wipes Drying Out: Moisture Escapes

A wet wipe contains about 70% to 80% water (plus humectants, preservatives, etc.). If not sealed, the water will slowly evaporate into the air, turning the wet wipe into a dry wipe. So when unused Wipes Dry out after opening, 99% of the time the problem is poor packaging seal, not the wipes themselves.

Three Key Points of Packaging Seal Integrity

  1. Flip top lid seal ring

In flip top wet wipe packs, the lid has a soft rubber seal ring. When the lid is closed, the seal ring presses tightly against the opening edge, preventing air exchange. If the seal ring material is too hard, lacks elasticity, or the mold precision is poor, gaps will appear. Our tests show that the best sealing occurs when the seal ring compression is between 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. Below 0.2 mm, air leakage is likely.

  1. Resealable label

Portable wet wipe packs often use a resealable label – a sticker covering the dispensing opening. After repeated peeling and resealing, the adhesive surface picks up dust and fibers, losing tack. A good resealable label has “edge sensitive” adhesive that can still stick even with light dust, as long as you press firmly. The labels we use can be resealed more than 30 times with less than 30% loss in peel strength.

  1. Heat seal edges

The four edges of the whole pack are heat sealed. If the heat seal temperature is too low, pressure insufficient, or there is liquid residue at the seal area, that spot will leak air. Before shipment, we do a “seal integrity test”: submerge a whole pack in water and squeeze it to see where bubbles emerge. Bubbles indicate a leak point.

💯 How Buyers Can Judge Seal Integrity

Flip top packs: After closing the lid, squeeze the center of the lid with your finger. If you feel elastic rebound, the seal ring is making good contact. Also check for gaps between the lid and the base.

Resealable label packs: Peel the label open, then reseal it and press firmly along the edge with your finger. After 24 hours, touch the top wipe – if it feels significantly drier, the label seal is not adequate.

Transport test: In the low pressure of an aircraft cargo hold, poorly sealed packs can bulge or even burst. We run simulated low pressure tests, pulling a vacuum to 0.6 atmosphere – packs that do not rupture or bulge are considered qualified.

How Our Factory Does It

We produce Baby Wipes and kitchen wipes, using both flip top and resealable label packaging. The flip top seal ring is made of food grade TPE, with balanced hardness and softness. The resealable labels are multi layer composites with a barrier layer in the middle. Every batch of packaging is randomly tested for seal integrity before entering the warehouse. When you source wet wipes, you can ask the supplier for “seal integrity test reports” and “packaging material specifications”.

When Wet Wipes dry out, it is not because the wipes are “bad” – it is because the packaging “failed to hold”. With proper seal integrity, your customers will find the last wipe as moist as the first. That is the standard we follow.
