II. Recycled Fiber: Performance Compromises Behind the Eco-Label
Recycled fiber uses waste paper (such as office paper, books, and newspapers) as raw material, which goes through de-inking, impurity removal, bleaching, and other processes to produce pulp. Because these fibers have undergone pressing and drying during their initial papermaking cycle, plus mechanical shearing during repulping, their length is significantly shortened and their surfaces become hornified, resulting in markedly weakened inter-fiber bonding strength. This microscopic damage translates directly into macroscopic performance differences: in terms of strength, the tensile index of recycled toilet paper is typically 15%–25% lower than that of virgin paper of the same basis weight, and it is more prone to tearing when wet; in terms of softness, while softeners can be added to improve feel, the inherent fiber structural damage prevents "natural softness" from reaching virgin-grade levels; in terms of dust shedding, the higher content of short and fine fibers makes the surface prone to releasing dust particles during use, which may cause mild irritation for sensitive individuals. The advantages of recycled fiber lie in lower raw material costs and reduced timber consumption, making it suitable for mid-to-low-end markets or environmentally conscious consumer segments. However, clients should be reminded that "eco-premium" pricing in end markets is generally only accepted when there is no visible compromise in appearance and feel — otherwise, repeat purchase rates will be difficult to sustain.
