Wet Wipes Dry Out and Harden After Opening – Is That a Quality Problem? Actually, It's Designed That Way

2026-05-12

Why Do Wet Wipes Dry Out and Harden?

The main ingredients of Wet Wipes are water, humectants, and nonwoven fabric. Water accounts for over 70%. Once the package is opened, air enters and the water slowly evaporates. When the nonwoven loses its moisture, the fibers shrink and harden – this is simple physics, not a quality issue. Leave a slice of bread on a table for a few hours and it will also harden – same principle.

Good Wet Wipes Dry Out More Slowly

Quality Wet Wipes do two things: they use a high barrier packaging film with low oxygen and moisture vapor transmission, and the lid or resealable sticker seals well. So after opening, they stay wet longer. But no matter how good the wipe, if you leave the pack open for a month, the ones near the opening will inevitably dry out. That is not a defect – it is a reminder to use them sooner.

Why Do Some Wet Wipes Stay Wet for a Long Time?

Some customers say: “A brand I bought at the supermarket stayed wet for two months after opening.” That could be because the formula contains more humectants (like propylene glycol or glycerin) that lock in moisture; or because the local climate is humid, slowing evaporation. It could also be a stronger preservative system. In any case, the “moisture retention time” of a wet wipe can be customized – if you want them to stay wet longer, we can increase the humectant content in the formulation.

Can Dry, Hardened Wipes Still Be Used?

If only the edges of a few wipes have dried out and become hard, but the rest are still wet, you can use them normally. If the whole pack is dry, that means it has been open too long or the package is damaged. In that case, it is not recommended to use them on skin – the cleaning effect will be poor because of insufficient moisture, and the dry fibers will be abrasive, potentially irritating the skin.

How to Judge Quality When Sourcing Wet Wipes

Do not use “how long before the Wipes Dry out after opening” as the only standard. Instead, pay more attention to:

Whether the single wipe weight is correct (if it says 50 g, it should not be far off).

Whether the liquid pH is close to slightly acidic skin pH (4.5–6.5)

Whether the nonwoven is soft and lint free.

Whether the package seal is strong and leak proof.

What Our Factory Can Offer

We produce wet wipes, from baby hand and mouth wipes to kitchen wipes and Wet Toilet Paper. The humectant content can be adjusted to your requirements – if you want the wipes to stay moist longer after opening, we can add more glycerin; if you prefer a cleaner feel, we can reduce it. We also produce sanitary napkins, with the same attention to top sheet dryness and package seal integrity.
