SAP stands for super absorbent polymer. It is a functional polymer material. It looks like fine salt – white, odorless, and granular. Its characteristic is that it can absorb dozens or even hundreds of times its own weight in liquid, and it locks the liquid in so it does not come back out. When you tear open a sanitary pad or a baby diaper, the soft, fluffy cotton-like layer inside is a mixture of nonwoven fabric and SAP. When SAP particles come into contact with water, they quickly swell into a transparent gel. That is why a used sanitary napkin becomes thicker and softer, yet the surface stays dry.

SAP is not an industrial toxin. It has been widely used in Baby Diapers, adult incontinence products, and feminine hygiene products for over thirty years, and its safety has been thoroughly verified. It is also used in medical dressings to absorb wound fluid.

✅ Is It Harmful If It Touches the Skin? Generally No.

Under normal use, SAP is wrapped inside the nonwoven fabric and the absorbent core, so it does not come into direct contact with skin. Even if the surface of the sanitary napkin is damaged and a small amount of SAP leaks out and sticks to the skin, there is no need to panic. SAP itself is non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-allergenic. Its physical properties are similar to sand or starch – it is not absorbed through the skin. It can be removed by rinsing with clean water. If it accidentally gets into the eyes, rinse with plenty of water.

A very small number of people with a specific allergy to polymer materials may experience slight redness or itching. This is extremely rare. If it happens, stop using the product and switch to a sanitary napkin with a 100% cotton topsheet.

💯 Why Add SAP to Sanitary Napkins? For Dryness

A sanitary napkin without SAP relies on cotton pulp to absorb liquid. Once the cotton pulp is saturated, any pressure causes back flow – the surface becomes wet, which can lead to skin redness and irritation. SAP locks liquid firmly inside the core so that even under pressure it does not come back to the surface. That is the secret behind the “stay dry” surface of quality sanitary napkins. Tampons may also use SAP to enhance their absorbency.
