What Does a Sanitary Napkin Production Line Look Like? 

Three Rolls of Material Unwind at the Same Time

When the production line starts, three different material rolls unwind simultaneously. The top roll is thermally bonded nonwoven fabric, which contacts the skin. The middle roll is the core material, a mixture of wood pulp and super absorbent polymer (SAP). The bottom roll is a breathable, leakproof backsheet. The machine aligns and bonds these layers together, with a tolerance within 1 millimeter.

Embossing the Acquisition Channels

The combined material passes through a pair of heated steel rollers. The surface of the rollers is engraved with patterns that press grooves into the surface of the sanitary napkin. These grooves are acquisition channels. Their function is to quickly spread liquid across the absorbent core, preventing it from pooling in one spot. Products without acquisition channels absorb slowly and are more likely to leak.

Cutting and Shaping

The material continues moving forward into a rotating forming die. Every rotation of the die cuts one complete sanitary napkin shape. The trimmed edges are vacuumed away and baled for recycling. At the same time, the machine seals the edges with ultrasonic energy, preventing SAP particles from leaking out of the core.

Individual Wrapping

After cutting, each sanitary napkin is immediately folded and pushed into a small film pouch. The pouch is sealed on three or four sides by a heat sealer, then cut. One individually wrapped sanitary napkin is finished. From bare pad to wrapped product takes less than two seconds.

Stacking and Bagging

Multiple individually wrapped sanitary napkins are collected, counted automatically by the machine, stacked neatly, and then packed into a plastic bag or paper carton. Finally, they are boxed, palletized, and stored in the warehouse.

 The Whole Line Runs in a Few Minutes

From the moment the nonwoven roll is loaded until individually wrapped sanitary napkins drop off the end of the line, a standard production line takes only three to five minutes. Dozens of sensors monitor basis weight, thickness, and seal strength in real time. If any data drifts out of spec, the machine stops automatically and sounds an alarm.
