What Feminine Hygiene Product Offers the Best Absorbency? Sanitary Napkins vs. Tampons – Which One Holds More?
Sanitary Napkins and Tampons Absorb Differently
First, let's look at sanitary napkins. Their absorbency comes from the super absorbent polymer (SAP) and wood pulp in the core. A good regular daytime sanitary napkin typically has an absorbency of 80 to 150 milliliters. Overnight extra-long pads can reach over 200 milliliters. Sanitary napkins absorb menstrual fluid as it exits the body, relying on surface contact. They handle heavy flow well because of their larger surface area.
Now, tampons. Tampons are worn internally and catch the flow before it leaves the body. Their absorbency depends on size and compression density. A regular absorbency tampon holds about 6-9 grams; a super plus tampon can hold 12-15 grams (roughly 12-15 milliliters). Yes, you read that right – a single tampon holds far less than a sanitary napkin.
✅ Then Why Do Some People Think Tampons Are More Absorbent?
Because the advantage of tampons is not "total capacity" but "no waste." When a sanitary napkin absorbs fluid, some moisture remains on the surface, leaving a wet feeling. A tampon absorbs internally – the fluid is locked away before it ever reaches the outside, so everything feels dry. That's why many people feel cleaner with tampons and mistakenly believe they "hold more."
In reality, if someone has very heavy bleeding (such as postpartum or menorrhagia), a tampon can saturate quickly and may leak. In those cases, the capacity of a sanitary napkin wins.
Which Product Has the Highest Absorbency?
If we are comparing sheer "how much can it hold," panty-style sanitary napkins and overnight extra-long sanitary napkins have the highest capacity. Our factory has tested this: a 420mm panty-style sanitary napkin can hold 250-300 milliliters – equivalent to a full day's menstrual flow for an average woman. No tampon can match that.
However, "highest absorbency" does not mean "best for everyone." Tampons are less stuffy, allow freedom of movement, and don't interfere with sports. Many women use a tampon plus a light pad during the day, and switch to an overnight sanitary napkin at night.
