Why Does the Tape on Some Diapers Not Stick Well? The Fit Tolerance Between Front Tape and Side Tapes
The Tape System Is Not Just “Velcro” – It Consists of Two Parts: Front Tape + Side Tapes
The tape system of a diaper has two components: the front tape (located on the belly area, usually a loop material) and the side tapes (located at the ends of the left and right waistbands, with hook material). When pressed together, the hooks and loops engage. If they do not stick well, either the hooks are not good, or the loops are not good, or the two pieces do not align properly.
■ Fit Tolerance: The Side Tape Does Not Land on the Effective Area of the Front Tape
This is the most common cause. The front tape has a fixed width and height (for example, 40mm wide, with an effective loop area of only the central 30mm). If the hook area of the side tape is too narrow, or if it is applied off center, the hooks may only catch the edge of the front tape or miss it completely.We have tested this: when the effective contact area between the side tape and the front tape is less than 70%, the peel strength drops by more than 50%. Many “does not stick” complaints are actually due to the user not aligning the tapes properly during wear, not a material defect. However, if the design itself is flawed – for example, the hook area on the side tape is too short or the loop area on the front tape is too narrow – then no matter how carefully you put on the diaper, it will not stick securely.
Hook and Loop Compatibility: Not Any Pair Works Together
The loop height, density, and fiber fineness of the front tape must match the hook shape, height, and density of the side tape. Hooks that are too thick cannot penetrate the loops; hooks that are too thin cannot catch them; loops that are too dense block the hooks; loops that are too sparse have nowhere for the hooks to engage.
Whenever we change supplier for tape materials, we run compatibility tests: peel strength, shear strength, and repeated fastening cycles. The industry standard is that after 10 open and close cycles, the peel strength should still be at least 70% of the initial value.
■ Tolerance Accumulation in Production: Material Thermal Expansion/Contraction, Die Cut Offsets
The positions of the front tape and side tapes on the diaper are set by sensors and mechanical guides on the production line. If the material drifts by 1mm, by the time it reaches the tape die cut station the drift may be 3mm. After several such tolerances add up, the centerline of the side tape may be 5mm or more away from the centerline of the front tape. In that case, no matter how good the materials are, they will not align.
Our factory marks each roll of material at the splice and checks tape alignment every half hour during production. If the deviation exceeds 2mm, we stop the line and adjust. We can also add a “application guide” diagram on the packaging to help users align the tapes correctly.
